      Hello,
i’m evaluating a nordic nrf9160 modem for a gps tracking application and have some problems with the right psm settings, when using roaming sim card.

My settings are working with 1nce sim cards. But with emnify sim cards my setting for the active timer is not accepted by the network.
I tried the same values for active time which are working with the 1nce sim card but also with other values. I need something in the range of 20-60 seconds.

Other networks like vodafone are working with the emnify sim cards.

Are there some restrictions for roaming sim cards?

My development is in Germany, but it should also work in Austria.

      Regards Christian

Hi @Christian-Jacobsen, probably you checked already the docs from emnify:
“… not all NB-IoT and LTE-M networks have implemented PSM - and even when PSM is available with the local operator this does not mean that a roaming SIM can use it. This makes it difficult for devices that are moving - in case they use PSM, and the new network does not support PSM - or only other timer configurations…”
The PSM availability and timer settings depend on which mobile network you want to use and how the operator offers these features.
Deutsche Telekom and our NatCo’s as MNOs offer roaming for our SIM in our footprint with exact the same power saving settings throughout our footprint. See details here for NB-IoT and here for LTE-M.
In the end, availability and timer settings depend from which operator your modem tries to attach to.

          Hi @Christian-Jacobsen,

Full LTE-M Roaming support with EMnify will be implemented in Germany on March 18, 2022. From that date onwards, PSM and Long-Periodic TAU features should be available to you with this SIM-card.
Availability dates in Austria and other DT networks however aren’t currently available.

          Kind regards, Ronan

            Hi,
thanks for your answers, very interesting information.
I’ll try it after that date.

Actually the device with the 1nce sim card goes into PSM sleep and also receives GPS-positions but wakes up all 15-20minutes. Also with longer sleep times.

            Kind regards,
            Christian
